Music Department

This year, the UCSC Gamelan Ensembles are presenting a program of rarely performed traditional music from West Java and Bali. Featuring the West Javanese repertoire that has been championed by director Undang Sumarna for the past 40 years, as well as the rare semar pegulingan instruments, played by the Balinese Gamelan ensemble. This year's program presents a mix of instrumental and dance music, drawing on rich performance traditions from around Indonesia. The ensembles are directed by Undang Sumarna and Brian Baumbusch, and the performance will feature one of the U.S.'s leading Balinese gamelan dancers, Shoko Yamamuro.
